“The questions are already there: it’s up to the artist to put them on fire”

September 7th, 2009 by claudianeri

Tonight at BJCEM will take place the mass performance of Nhelden, a group of artists (actors, directors and musicians) from the Netherlands and Belgium, who made a journey through Eastern Europe before arriving here at Skopje with the aim to give energy to people and get in touch with them through music, shows and performances.

We met them yesterday and they told us about the artistic idea which stays behind this 3 months lasting tour, its successes and failures. Actually, the journey itself is a performance, which evolves and adapts to the different contexts combining a lot of disciplines. The aim is to reach people outside of art galleries and institutional places and find new ways to communicate with the audience.

Tonight they would like to create the image of a huge burning question mark with hundreds of people holding a torch in Macedonia Square. The question mark is a symbol of the current young generation, which has no answers to the big questions of life. Neither the artist has got this answer, bat this can be turned into something positive, a big energy going through people.

After a lot of events, like workshops with Roma children and concerts in clubs, the journey will end next week in Belgrade. The documentation of the journey will become an exhibition, which will go back to the cities together with a music tour.

Tonight the lights of the square will be turned off for 10 minutes.
We are looking forward to experiencing this huge performance tonight.

We are waiting for you all at 8 pm at the Youth Cultural Center!

Nhelden – A human mass performance in square

September 6th, 2009 by Patrizia

On Monday 7th of September starting at 20 o’clock starting at the Youth Cultural Centre Skopje and ending in Macedonia Square, the dutch group Nhelden will show a mass performance in the city centre as part of their performance on the Biennial of Young Artists of Europe.

Nhelden are in Skopje with their project Roll With It. Five boys (three actors from Holland, a director from Belgium and an actor from Prague, all living in Amsterdam) took two vans and some cameras to make a tour to 8 ‘east’ European capitals in 80 days. The tour consists out of performances in public space with the music band LnSaint, interviews and collaborations with local people and artists and a website www.rollwithit.nl.

Now especially for the Biennial and people of Skopje they want to do better then ever. Instead of doing a ‘theatrical’ show inside a building, they will take the audience outside on the street to make a big image. An image that stands for everything they want to say about their generation. So Nhelden wants to create in the city centre, together with as many people as possible from Skopje, the image of a Burning Question Mark, in their opinion the symbol of the currently new generation.

Hundreds of people with a huge candle or small torch forming one big question mark in the public space.
They would like to invite all the press to be there, there are places on roof tops arranged for photo and film. This human image will be huge because also the lights on the square will go off.
You are very welcome to come and take pictures or film.
